Abstract

On December 12, 2025, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry E. Korzhevskii, Doctor of Sciences in Medicine and Head of the Laboratory of Functional Morphology of the Central and Peripheral Nervous System at the Institute of Experimental Medicine, celebrates his 60th birthday. This article discusses the highlights of his life and scientific career. For more than thirty years, Professor Korzhevskii’s professional life has been closely associated with the Institute of Experimental Medicine. Here D.E. Korzhevsky rose from a senior research fellow to head of the laboratory and department. The article highlights the principal areas of his scientific activity and his contributions to the advancement of cell biology, histology, and cytology, including the development and refinement of modern morphological research methods based on immunohistochemical techniques and confocal laser microscopy. For many years, Professor Korzhevskii has been a member of the editorial board of the journal Morphology and a regular reviewer of submitted manuscripts. The staff of the Laboratory of Functional Morphology of the Central and Peripheral Nervous System and the Laboratory of Experimental Histology and Confocal Microscopy at the Institute of Experimental Medicine sincerely congratulate Professor Korzhevskii on his anniversary and wish him continued scientific success!

On December 12, 2025, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry E. Korzhevskii, Doctor of Sciences in Medicine and Head of the Laboratory of Functional Morphology of the Central and Peripheral Nervous System at the Institute of Experimental Medicine, celebrates his 60th birthday (Fig. 1). After graduating from the Department of General Medicine of the First Pavlov Leningrad Medical Institute (since 1994, the First Pavlov St. Petersburg State Medical University) in 1988, Korzhevskii stayed on to work at the Department of Histology, Cytology, and Embryology. In 1992, he defended his Candidate of Sciences thesis majoring in Histology, Cytology, Embryology at the Thesis Board of the Research Institute of Experimental Medicine (IEM). The work was supervised by Professor Katinas (1925–2014) and was devoted to the temporal features of connective tissue regeneration. The formation of Korzhevskii as a scientist occurred not only under the guidance of Professor Katinas, a student and follower of the renowned scientist in the field of tissue biology, and Professor Mikhailov (1908–1994), but also under the influence of Sapozhnikova, Candidate of Sciences in Medicine, a student of Professor Shevchenko (1903–1982). His profound knowledge of the subject, exceptional lecturing skills, ability to captivate the audience, and benevolence towards students allowed Korzhevskii to successfully combine scientific work with teaching activities for several years.

For over thirty years, starting in 1993, Professor Korzhevskii’s professional life has been closely associated with the Institute of Experimental Medicine. He was invited to IEM by Otellin, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAS), Head of the Morphology Department. Here, Korzhevskii advanced from a senior researcher to head of a laboratory and department. Moreover, in 2001, at IEM, he prepared and successfully defended his Doctor of Sciences thesis The Vascular Plexus of the Human Brain: Histogenesis and Tissue Organization; the scientific consultant of the work was Otellin, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAS).

Throughout his years of work at IEM, Korzhevskii's research activities were repeatedly honored with awards and prizes. He received a Letter of Appreciation from the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (2005) and a Certificate of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences “For Fruitful Work in Developing Medical Science and Healthcare” (2010). In 2019, Korzhevskii was honored to deliver the keynote speech at IEM's Annual Ceremony Day on the topic: Neuroglia and Its Role in the Pathogenesis of Nervous System Diseases. In 2021, he became a laureate of the prestigious Prince of Oldenburg Prize for a series of scientific works on microglia of the central nervous system. The same year, Korzhevskii was awarded the ministerial medal “For Contribution to the Implementation of State Policy in Scientific and Technological Development” by the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Korzhevskii has repeatedly served as principal investigator for grants from various foundations, namely the Regional Public Foundation for Support of National Medicine, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, and the Russian Science Foundation. His research has focused on neurogenesis and angiogenesis in the embryonic brain, neurodegeneration, the role of macrophages and microglia in neuroinflammation, and other related issues. For the past twelve years, Korzhevskii has served as Secretary of the Local Ethics Committee at the Institute of Experimental Medicine. He currently serves as an expert for the Russian Science Foundation and is a member of the Expert Council on Cognitive Sciences of the Higher Attestation Commission under the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education. He is also a member of the editorial boards of several scientific journals: Biological Communications, Morphology, Medical Academic Journal, and Genes & Cells. Korzhevskii regularly reviews scientific articles for Russian and international specialized journals. For many years, he has been a member of two thesis boards (D 24.1.158.01 and D 24.1.158.02) for candidate and doctoral thesis defenses at IEM.

Korzhevskii is a co-author of over 600 scientific works published in Russian and international peer-reviewed journals included in the White List, with a total citation count of 5000. His research has gained international recognition and is cited in high-impact scientific journals such as Brain Research, Nature Reviews Neuroscience, Neuroscience Research, and others. According to the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI), his Hirsch index is h = 28. Korzhevskii is frequently invited to deliver plenary lectures at scientific conferences. He is the author of 9 invention patents. Five candidate theses have been defended under his supervision and consultation, with five more graduate students and applicants currently working on their thesis research. According to colleagues and students, Korzhevskii is distinguished by his professionalism, integrity, scholarly erudition, and meticulous approach to work. His exceptional scientific intuition enables the development and refinement of modern morphological research methods based on immunohistochemical approaches and confocal laser microscopy (Fig. 1). Korzhevskii has authored over 30 new methodological developments for morphological research with diagnostic significance. More than 10 manuals and monographs have been published based on these developments. Some of his developed methods are included in international guidelines1.

The staff of the Laboratory of Functional Morphology of the Central and Peripheral Nervous System and the Laboratory of Experimental Histology and Confocal Microscopy at the Institute of Experimental Medicine, along with the editorial board of the journal Morphology, sincerely congratulate Professor Korzhevskii on his anniversary and wish him continued scientific success!
